Why does the Tea Party want to...?

Repealing the 17th Amendment is a longstanding cause of the fringe right. They seem to believe that direct election of Senators is somehow an infringement of States' Rights, which strikes me as a pretty silly claim. But the person above who thinks that nobody actually wants to repeal the 17th is wrong. It takes only a few seconds in Google to find dozens of sites like the ones below.
