Should I have acl surgery for my dog?

My dog is 82 lb lab/mastiff - he tore his acl last Oct.he limps and semi uses his leg. He has not lost any muscle m in his leg. we have limited his walking and playing with other dogs - which he misses. he is happy and doesn't seem to be in pain. should he have surgery? will he improve? will he ever be able to play with other dogs again? we are thinking of getting a talor fit brace for his leg - is this helpful?
